Passengers is a Sci-fi film with thrilling events and heart-warming romance starring Chris Pratt and Academy Award winner Jeniffer Lawrence. This marvellous piece of cinematography revolves around a 120-year-old journey through space in the Starship Avalon, to colonize the planet Homestead II. The way both the actors have expressed themselves even though there was a heavy involvement of CGI and usage of virtual reality is astonishing.
With an IMDb rating of 7.0/10, this has very well portrayed the idea of colonizing another planet in the future and has shown the journey of 5,000 passengers who are suspended in a simulated animation in hibernation pods. It centres around how one of the hibernation pods malfunctioned and a passenger – Chris Pratt also known as Jim Preston wakes up 90 years prior to the scheduled wake-up date. Shortly, Jim is faced with an ethical dilemma followed by a sudden but mysterious fallout of the Starship Avalon which put the entire voyage to Homestead II at risk. Despite the fact that the concept of hibernation pods and animated sleeps are far along the future, and impossible with the current technology, the way the movie makes sense of all the technological aspects is really something to think about. Not only this but it also opens doors to more opportunities in the future regarding
space technology and gives a quite innovative approach to colonisation of another planet.
What’s interesting is that scientists are currently studying treatments for astronauts after their trip through the space shuttle, hence hibernation pods could be possible to some extent, in the far future.
This story, is one of immense suspense and drama, along with romance and exhilaration. One would definitely want to see how one malfunction set off a love story that was given too less time to run its course.
