Film review- Inception

By Heer Bhatia

Dom Cobb played by Leonardo DiCaprio, is a thief with the rare ability to enter people's dreams and steal their secrets from their subconscious. His skill has made him a hot commodity in the world of corporate espionage but has also cost him everything he loves. Cobb gets a chance at redemption when he is offered a seemingly impossible task: plant an idea in someone's mind. If he succeeds, it will be the perfect crime, but a dangerous and familiar enemy anticipates Cobb's every move.

This seemingly easy task is in reality not an easy one at all. The brain has the power to differentiate between an idea but was thought by ourselves verse an idea we overheard or were told by someone. In order to carry out this assign Cobb go layers deep within a said person’s mind in order to plant the idea, given by this client, and to make the target think it was one of his own. To plant this idea Cobb and his team of highly skilled recruits spent almost 50 years in the dream world due to the time dilation, although in reality it was only 10 hours, then had to go to a dream, within a dream, within a dream and with each layer it 20x the time they feel to have spent in that world.

“Inception” is one of THE biggest sci-fi movies of our generation: a Christopher Nolan classic. For those who haven’t seen the film, it explores relatively untouched parts of neuroscience. In the movie, “dream sharing” is a way for people to feel that they are actually living their dreams and is a way for them to remember their unconscious epiphanies and share these experiences with their friends, however the downside of these as stated in the movie is that once people start dream sharing on a basis one cannot sleep without it and becomes reliant on a machine to help them sleep each night. Although such a unique type of technology does not exist it is unexpected that one may be developed in the future as they are projects underway across the world to help science better understand dreams which will further allow us to know how to control them.

For all those that enjoy sci-fi, action and a rush of adrenaline, Inception is a must watch cult-classic and fan favourite!
