What is Behavioural Neuroscience?

By Driti Gundana

Take a second and think, how does my brain make sense of all the information the world constantly throws at it? What is happening to our brains as we go about our daily activities? Researchers have discovered how particular activities and actions can affect our brains, thus affecting our behaviour.

Behavioural Neuroscience examines the biological basis of behaviour and how it impacts our nervous system. Here, researchers thoroughly study the ongoings inside the brain to see its response to a particular situation. The study investigates the level of nerve cells and the basic biological processes that underlie normal and abnormal behaviour. Experiments mainly involve rats, mice, and monkeys for they hold a remarkable resemblance to human pathology and contribute to evidence-based practices.

Why is behavioural neuroscience vital?

Studies in the behavioural sciences increase our capacity to evaluate, comprehend, forecast, enhance, and manage human behaviour, which provides us with the means to tackle a wide range of societal problems. Our knowledge of a variety of subjects, such as the neurobiology of addiction, ageing, sleep, trauma, and anxiety, has advanced because of the work of behavioural neuroscientists.

For example, substantial treatment data regarding the neurobiology of addiction have been obtained through the use of modern behavioural neuroscience technologies. Brain imaging studies on drug addicts reveal anatomical alterations in brain regions vital for behavioural regulation, learning and memory, judgement, and decision-making. When drugs or other stimuli are present, there is a decrease in the transmission of impulses from the brain's striatum to the prefrontal cortex, which controls self-control. This reduction has been shown by brain imaging techniques such as MRI, fMRI, MRS, PET, and SPECT.

How can behavioural neuroscience improve the work environment?

Increasing productivity, safety, and well-being at work may be successful, data-driven. initiative. Unparalleled insights on distracting aspects of the workplace, the most productive meeting forms, and the overall stress levels of your team members may be gained by analysing the cerebral activity of employees. By evaluating EEG patterns of brain activity and identifying the behaviours that support a secure, healthy, and driven atmosphere at work, companies may find a balance between efficiency and cognitive and physical well-being.

One use of EEG headsets is in the study of how stress among mothers affects an infant's neural development. After studying the neurodevelopment of seventy-nine two-month-old newborns, researchers found that caregivers' felt stress is substantially and adversely correlated with baby spectral strength in the Beta and Delta frequency bands. These results led researchers to conclude that newborns' EEGs can be utilised to determine vulnerability and resilience markers. Quick action might be possible by lowering stress among mothers and mitigating the effects on newborns who are at risk of later experiencing health and cognitive issues.
