The sky is something we see every day. From the classic light blue in our preschool drawings to the majestic sunsets we witness, have we ever wondered about the science behind these magical colors?
To explain briefly – particles of gases and other substances in the atmosphere scatter the rays of sunlight in various directions. Blue light is scattered more than most of the other colors because it travels with a shorter wavelength. This is why we see a blue sky. However, violet is scattered the most according to the spectrum, so our skies may actually be purple! But we never see a sky in that color because our eyes are more sensitive to blue light than violet.
What about multi-coloured sunsets? Multi-colored sunsets are a result of further scattering.
